Common signs that your exhause has a problem
RUST
Rust is a number 1 problem for exhausts. Rust problems occur from taking short trips frequently which allows water vapour to collect in the exhaust system and because it’s a short trip the exhaust never gets never gets hot enough to burn it off. Over time this condensation turns to rust and corrodes the exhaust from inside.
FAULTY OXYGEN SENSOR
As discussed before modern cars can have numerous oxygen sensors, one sensor not working correctly will send the wrong information to the cars computer causing fuel to be sent in the wrong amounts.
EXHAUST LEAKS
Bumps and potholes in roads can shake the exhaust. This constant shaking can effect the exhausts joints and can cause it to crack which could also leak poisonous fumes.
CLOGGED MUFFLER
Driving on bumpy roads can make the exhausts small internal parts can come loose and can travel down and clog the muffler.
BROKEN HANGERS
These are the parts that keep the exhaust system from moving when you hit a bump. However, if you hit bumps over and over again, it could break and fall off, leaving the exhaust pipe free to move. This can lead to the the exhaust system getting dents, cracks, or even whole pieces break off.

EXHAUST SMOKE
Though any colour of smoke from a car's exhaust is bad, the cause of the smoke will depend on its colour. Most of the time, blue-gray exhaust smoke means that oil is burning in the combustion chamber. This could be caused by a number of things, such as worn cylinder walls, piston rings, valve seals, or the PCV system.
It means your fuel is too rich if you get black smoke. The fuel return line, fuel nozzles or fuel pressure control could be to blame for the fuel being too rich.
Finally, if the smoke from your exhaust system is white/grey coolant may be burning in the combustion chamber due to this. This could be because the cylinder head, engine block, or head gasket is broken or smashed. It could cost a lot to fix this, so you need to get your car's exhaust checked right away.
Because it's better to be safe than sorry, you should have your exhaust system checked every year or two.
